The Rainbow Hotel, 2025

This work began with a simple act of noticing—a broken hotel sign on a plain wall, where the word Rainbow had partially fallen away, leaving only Rain and the ghost of what once was. The embedded shadows of the fallen letters urge the viewer to complete the word, fill in what’s missing, project color onto grayscale, and attempt to restore what time has taken. The Rainbow Hotel suggests that what we see is never just what’s there, but also what once was—and how the embedded shadow of the past constructs our present. The work is not a call for viewers to choose what to read. It is a meditation on the ephemeral threshold between presence and absence.

The Rainbow Hotel is a large-format silver gelatin print that captures the side of a weathered building where the word Rainbow once appeared in full. Now only Rain remains in raised letters, while the faded outlines of b, o, and w linger as ghostly shadows on the wall. This subtle but striking image explores themes of impermanence, memory, and perception—inviting viewers to consider how we complete what’s missing and project meaning onto absence. The work turns a simple moment of urban decay into a quiet reflection on how reality is often shaped as much by what’s no longer there as by what remains.
